During our last trip to London, we finally had the chance to visit the Barbican.
It’s been on my list of must-see brutalist architecture for a while and what a exquisite example it is. It was designed as a utopian vision for this devastated area after London was bombed during WWII.
It’s very bold and beautiful. It’s unapologetically cold and stern. But it’s also surprisingly livable and different from any other building complex, with lots of green spaces and water gardens. Most of them, I’m going to guess, artificially dyed.
It also scratches my very particular itch for multi-levels; it’s easy to lose track of really how high up you are while walking through it’s many corridors and halls.
More than anything, it feels like a time capsule. I bet those rugged walls have countless stories.
