We’ve all grown up with American movies and TV shows. Two things these tend to capture are places where people gather and the food culture they share.
Diners are a quintessential part of this Americana culture. To me they’ve always conveyed comfort, a sense of intimacy, a familiar place far away from home. And much of it is thanks to Seinfeld.
While in NYC a few weeks ago, I craved for this feeling and visited 5 different diners in 5 days. This is especially unusual for me, since I never have breakfast.
The order was simple: 2 eggs over easy, bacon, hash browns, and toast. In two occasions I also ordered pancakes, which I regretted later.
Here are the places I had the pleasure to start my day at:

Remedy Diner
This place was mostly empty when I stepped in, and was immediately greeted by a waiter that pointed me to a table and took my drink order. Service was efficient and warm without being overbearing. Food was also great and their hash browns were the best out of this trip.
Best for service ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Soho Diner
This place beautifully captures the old school vibe of diners from the 50s. The booths, decoration, and lighting (which mostly ruined the photos) are so special. And that’s where the compliments end. Service was slow, the bacon wasn’t properly cooked, and the bread wasn’t toasted. It’s also expensive, since you’re paying mostly for the ambience.
Best for vibes ⭐⭐⭐

Landmark Coffee Shop
This place feels like it has stopped in time since the late 80s/early 90s. It’s raw and unpolished. The pictures have faded away with time, and they operate with a skeleton crew: one line cook behind the counter and a friendly owner coordinating the floor. Good food, great drinks, and a fantastic genuine diner experience.
Best for nostalgia ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Waverly Diner
I had been to Waverly Diner before, so my review will be biased. This place evoques memories that the others simply don’t. Everything is absolutely immaculate, from the surrounding space and interior ambiance, to the fantastic food, to the great service. I cannot recommend Waverly Diner enough; especially for first timers.
Best overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Westway Diner
This spot is famous for being the “birthplace” of Seinfeld. Supposedly Jerry and Larry figured out what the show would be while sitting at a booth and having a bite. It’s the reason why it was on my list. It’s the most commercial one from the bunch, so it’s packed from early hours and the ambiance, while cool, isn’t the most evocative. The menu though is super extensive, so there’s something for everyone.
Best for variety ⭐⭐⭐
