Giant Sequoias

The following and last day of our Yosemite adventure started early to the smell of a very American breakfast: bacon and eggs over muffins that we’d gotten from Pioneer Market in Mariposa the previous evening.

After that we packed some remaining items and said goodbye to the beautiful house. We had planned to go to Yosemite park again, entering through the South entrance, to check out the Giant Sequoias. And off we went.

A tranquil lakeside scene featuring lush green trees and a small white building, with clear reflections visible in the calm water under a bright blue sky.
A family enjoying breakfast together at a dining table, with two young girls and a woman sipping from a mug. Plates of food are present, including eggs and bacon, in a cozy, dimly lit kitchen setting.

After entering in the park for the second time and without too much planning, we found ourselves at the Welcome Plaza. This was still low-season and (fortunately) there were no buses taking people up and bringing them down, so we followed the directions to “Mariposa Grove”.

I say fortunately, because we trekked Washburn trail up to the Grove of Giant Sequoias, which ended up being the best thing about Yosemite.

I don’t say that lightly either — the entire park is mighty impressive, but there’s something so nice about a quiet and intimate walk through some woods. The slanted but smooth loam slopes covered with conifer needles made me wish I’d have my mountain bike with me.

The girls did the entire path by themselves, all 8.54 KM of it, including the trail up and down, as well as one of the loops at the top in the Grove itself. They had so much fun picking up walking sticks and making up games as they went. I was so proud of them.
