Yesterday I got to watch and listen Filho da Mãe (Rui Carvalho), a brilliant Portuguese acoustic guitar artist. He’s known for playing by himself, with the help of a few gadgets to loop and distort sounds; which, at times, sounded like an entire orchestra was behind the stage.

The big surprise was when 5 more people came on stage to play with Rui. The clarity of the acoustic guitar against the grit of two electric guitars, a bass, a keyboard and powerful drums gave Filho da Mãe’s compositions a whole different rendition and sound spectrum. Reminded me of 65daysofstatic at their best.
